GEA Internship

Overview

In the summer of 2020, I joined the GE Appliances UXUI team for a full-year internship. Even though we worked remotely amidst the global pandemic, I was able to practice my knowledge and skills as a UXUI designer through multiple projects- mainly consumer-facing mobile app experience associated with our smart home products. It was also an amazing opportunity to collaborate with and learn from a transnational and cross-cultural team of PMs, developers, UX researchers, and designers.

What I Did

For GE SmartHQ™ App

I worked on the update and iteration of the new features in the SmartHQ app(air and cooking product). I contributed assets including icons, graphics, and design components, and timely delivered high-fidelity wireframes.
I also participated in optimizing the controlling and commissioning experience in the SmartHQ app and assisted in building visual styles and new design systems of the SmartHQ 2.0 version. And we got good feedbacks in user tests!

The New Borns: Launderday™, SmartHQ Management™

I was primarily responsible for the MVP version of the Launderday and the SmartHQ Management app. I assisted PM to build the task flow and information architecture, delivered lo-fi and hi-fi wireframes. Both of the apps have launched their beta version and in field tests.

Consumer Electronics Experience & Interface Design

Cooperating with PMs, developers, and food specialists to deeply understand business requirements and technical limitations, I designed the cooking experience and interface of smart ovens integrated with machine learning and computer vision.
I contributed to the interface design and testing of various smart home appliances. I designed the hi-fi interactive prototypes of two ovens for user testing which provided significant insights for product development decisions. I also helped define the visual style of the Kitchen Hub product and a thermostat product branded SmartHQ.

Team Support

I actively participated in the critique of the design work of other team members, and I organized internal design sharing sessions about industrial news and design knowledge and skills. I researched and provided ideas for the LED animation library for GE Profile™ products and gained recognition in the design team

Featured Projects

Towards SmartHQ 2.0

Learning from the research of the current SmartHQ app, we strived to provide a better experience to users with a more intuitive and clean interface, to be specific, about the control and commissioning process. As a key contributor, I walked through the phase of research, design, iterations, and user tests and helped in defining the new UI guideline.

Launderday App

I had the chance to lead the UXUI design work of the Launderday mobile app. The MVP project revolved around defining, designing, iterating, and prototyping the key functions of the Launderday services. I also designed the app icon and the webpage of Launderday.
